Mola (2025)

Liner Notes

Mola tells the story of a Tibetan nun, exiled to Switzerland in the 1950s during the Chinese occupation. On her 100th birthday, she makes the profound decision to return to Tibet—to die in the land she still considers sacred. Her daughter, unable to accompany her due to political constraints, remains behind.

At its core, the film explores themes of spirituality, love as the most deeply human experience, and the emotional complexity of letting go of a loved one. In composing the score, I sought to express Buddhist spirituality through the lens of my own musical language. What does spirituality mean to me? How can I translate it into sound? This led me into a personal exploration, drawing from my German heritage—echoes of Bach and Beethoven—while also embracing the meditative clarity of Arvo Pärt and the emotional resonance of Max Richter. It became a search for balance between the spiritual and the profoundly human. I collaborated with Tibetan musician and composer Techung, who contributed authentic Tibetan elements to the score and added his own original compositions to the film’s soundtrack.
